2009 Inter-city Online English Debating Forum
Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School Vs Lee Kau Yan Memorial School (28 April 2009)

 

Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School, Malaysia, and Lee Kau Yan Memorial School, Hong Kong, launched the 2009 Inter-city Online English Debating Forum on 28 April 2009 in the school hall of Lee Kau Yan Memorial School. Student representatives of Tshung Tsin and Lee Kau Yan contended the motion ˇ§That money makes the world go round.ˇ¨ This year, it was our great honour to have Mr. Yau Lop-poon, Editor-in-Chief, Yazhou Zhoukan, as the keynote speaker. The adjudicators for this debate were Ms. Jude Day in Sabah and Ms. Andrea MacKenzie, Regional NET Coordinator, NET Section, in Hong Kong.

This online event commenced with welcoming speeches from Mr. Hiew Hoh-shin, Principal of Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School and Mr. Jonathan Lai Ping-wah, Principal of Lee Kau Yan Memorial School. About 100 local primary students, parents, teachers and students of Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School and Lee Kau Yan Memorial School were the spectators of the debate.

The forum aims to enhance studentsˇ¦ skills in such aspects as debating, research, critical thinking, reasoning competency as well as language proficiency in English. They were adjudicated according to their use of effective of language to convey a point of view and their ability to develop reasoned arguments. Trophies and certificates were awarded to the best speakers of each team.

Students from both schools performed very well with Mr. Wong Shi-yuen of Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School and Mr. Louis Wong of Lee Kau Yan Memorial School receiving the Best Speaker Awards, Their strong arguments and intelligent refutation were really impressive. The audience enjoyed a wonderful afternoon and was deeply impressed by both teams from Sabah and Hong Kong..

2nd English Debating Competition cum Dramatised Choral Speaking Performance


 

Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School , Malaysia , and Lee Kau Yan Memorial School , Hong Kong , launched the Inter-city Online English Debating Competition on 22 February, 2008 in the school hall of Lee Kau Yan Memorial School. It was the second, annual online debating competition for students in Sabah and Hong Kong . Student representatives of Tshung Tsin and Lee Kau Yan contested the motion "THAT violent sport such as boxing has no place in today's society and should be banned.ˇ¨ This year, it was our great honour to have Mr Alan Leong Kah-kit , SC, as the keynote speaker. The adjudicators for this debate were Mr Alexander Kitingan and Dr Melinda Tong in Sabah; and Mr Peter Broe, NET Scheme of EDB and Dr Peter Crisp, Language Coordinator of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

This online event was unveiled with a welcoming speech from Mr Jonathan Lai Ping Wah, Principal of Lee Kau Yan Memorial School, and was followed by an online greeting from Mr Tsen Kui On, Principal of Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School. The audience for this event included distinguished guests such as Professor Wong Po Choi of the Chinese University of Hong Kong , Mrs Fanny Law, the deputy to the 11 th National People's Congress and Mr. Jackson Ho, Senior Project Officer of the Quality Education Fund. A group of students from Ningbo Province also watched the debate with their teachers. More than 200 local primary and secondary students, parents, teachers and students of Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School and Lee Kau Yan Memorial School were the excited spectators of the debate.

The competition aimed to enhance students' skills in such aspects as debating, research, critical thinking, reasoning competency as well as language proficiency in English. They were adjudicated according to the capability of developing reasoned arguments and effective use of language to convey a point of view. Trophies and certificates were awarded to the winning team and best speakers of each team.

Students of both schools performed well. After an excellent debate, the panel of adjudicators unanimously gave Lee Kau Yan Memorial School the win. Mr Broe commended Sabah 's team approach in dealing with the motion. Jessica Lee of Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School and Jennifer Li of Lee Kau Yan Memorial School received the Best Speaker award to mark their strong performance. Their arguments and intelligent refutation and points of information were really impressive.

To share the joy of learning English through poetry and drama, S.1 students of Lee Kau Yan Memorial School proudly presented a dramatised choral speaking performance with students from two local primary schools. It was a charming performance. The audience was deeply impressed by the talent of the performers and enjoyed a wonderful and entertaining afternoon.
