English teachers from Chongqing visit Lee Kau Yan Memorial School |

In order to learn more about the development of the English subject, the deployment of resources within the school and the community, as well as the characteristics of the school-based curriculum in Hong Kong, fifty-five English teachers from Chongqing visited our school on 4 th November 2008. We made use of the opportunity to share our visions and missions with the Chongqing teachers. We were delighted to have Mr. Bolin, the Deputy Project Director of the EDB and Ms Poon, the Senior School Development Officer of the EDB participate in this meaningful event. There was a guided tour to the Language Resource Room and the Multi Media Learning Centre where the visitors found out more about self-access online learning. The tele-conferencing with principal Hiew of Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School (STTSS) further deepened the understanding of the Chongqing teachers about the English Debate and Public Speaking competitions jointly organized by STTSS and Lee Kau Yan. |

LKY Students at NET Conference |

|
On Saturday 1st November, a conference was held at Queen's College in Causeway Bay to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the NET scheme in Hong Kong . Two of our students, a current one, Wong Man from 7A , and a former one, Jeannette Siu, were asked to speak at the conference about their NET. There were several distinguished guests at the conference, including Prof Amy Tsui of HKU, Mr Michael Suen, Education Secretary and Dr K K Chan, Deputy Secretary of Education. Both Jeannette and Cat spoke very clearly and eloquently and were excellent ambassadors for our school. They also chatted very freely and easily with the VIP guests. |

Sharing with SKH Li Ping Secondary School |

About 15 English teachers from SKH Li Ping Secondary School visited our school on 14 March 2008. We had a sharing session on the teaching and administrative roles of English teachers and both parties benefited a lot from the function. |

Sharing at HKCDSS |

In November 2006, Ms Chau and Ms Lai were invited by the Hong Kong Catholic Diocesan Secondary Schools to share the successful application of EES (English Enhancement Scheme). More than 200 teachers from the local Catholic schools took part in the seminar. They were impressed by the strategic planning and thoughtful process the English Department went through prior to the writing of the proposal. Participating teachers also found the sample of the proposal and PowerPoint slides of the professional dialogue very useful |

Bridging the Gap-Sharing at Chi King Primary
School |

|
|
Our
Principal, Jonathan Lai was invited by the
Principal of Chi King Primary School to
illustrate the gap between the primary and
secondary English curriculum to the parents
of P.4 and P.5 students. Mr. Lai highlighted
the key elements of mastering the language
and informed the parents of effective ways
to prepare students for the new secondary
English curriculum. Two S.4 students, Jennifer
Li and Nicole Chan shared their successful
English learning experience in junior forms.
The participating teachers and parents found
Mr. Lai's speech very informative and humorous.
They were also impressed by the strategic
planning of the English Department of LKY
and the high language proficiency our students
displayed in due course. After the sharing,
Mr. Lai, Ms Chau, Ms Chan and the S.4 students
further discussed the strategies of learning
the language with the parents in small groups
with sincerity. We all had an enjoyable
yet meaningful evening at Chi King Primary
School.

Sharing at 'The Knowledge Fair of Creative
Teaching and Learning' (Association of Heads
of Wong Tai Sin Secondary Schools) |

On
12th May 2007, Mr. Lai, Ms Chau and Mr.
Man were invited by the Association of Heads
of Wong Tai Sin Secondary Schools to share
the successful application of the English
Enhancement Scheme at the function entitled
'The Knowledge Fair of Creative Teaching
and Learning'. Mr. Lai focused on the experience
of vision sharing to team building through
the EES application. The school also took
this opportunity to re-engineer the English
curriculum with collaborative effort from
varied subject panels and functional groups.
Ms Chau summarized some key points of the
EES application and the difficulties encountered
when implementing the EES programs. She
also illustrated how to integrate the EES
programs into the formal and informal curriculum
of the English Department. Mr. Man elaborated
the viable ways to encourage students to
complete the online English programs. We
sincerely exchanged views on educational
theories and practices with the educational
practitioners.

Professional Dialogue with Ning Pi College
and Fanling Rhenish Church Secondary School |

On
5th January 2007, Principal TANG King-Chi
and the senior and junior form coordinators
of Ning Po College visited the English panel
of Lee Kau Yan Memorial School. The coordinators
for English Department of Fanling Rhenish
Church Secondary School also joined the
sharing. The discussion focused on the management
of the English panel and effective ways
to promote an English rich environment.
In the meeting, Ms Chau, Ms Lai and some
of the coordinators shared their experience
in running the panel and some successful
activities organized last year. Principal
Lai gave a warm welcome to the visitors
and also illustrated how the school management
tendered support to enhance English learning
and teaching at school.
Useful
ideas were exchanged and friendship developed
among the English teachers of the three
schools.

Net Meeting |

|
On
Thursday 14th December, a group of Secondary
NETs based in the Wong Tai Sin district
met at Lee Kau Yan Memorial School to discuss
issues relating to the teaching of English
in Hong Kong. Ms Andrea MacKenzie, the Regional
NET Coordinator, based with the EMB, briefed
us on the new English Curriculum. She also
described in detail the role of EMB NET
coordinators.
In the second half of the meeting, Mr. Croft
gave a presentation on the use of blogs
with ESL classes. This was very well received
by those attending. Mr. Croft has now been
asked to give further presentations at other
area meetings. Following his presentation,
the NETs exchanged other ideas to enhance
teaching practice and agreed to hold the
next regional meeting in February.

Dissemination of Good Practice |

On
12th December 2006, two Mingpao journalists
observed the English lessons of S.4 students.
They wanted to explore how students learn
English through Language Arts. Ms Chau and
Ms Shek adapted TV commercials regarding
the total ban on smoking to facilitate active
learning. Principal Tsen of Tshung Tsin
Secondary School also observed the lessons
on line. He highly praised the innovative
teaching approach and the performance of
our students in his on-line interview with
the journalists. The journalists were impressed
by the pedagogical sound strategies, commendable
performance of our students and the nurturing
environment of the school.
After the class observation, the two journalists
conducted a group interview with students
and teachers in English. We were delighted
to share our successful experiences in the
teaching and learning of English through
Language Arts. The two journalists could
definitely see the benefits of this approach
as they were amazed by our students' confidence
displayed in the lessons and the interview.

Sharing on succssful application of EES |

On
1st November 2006, Principal Lai, Ms Chau
and Ms Lai were invited by the Association
of Chinese Middle Schools to share the successful
application of the English Enhancement Scheme.
More than 200 principals and teachers attended
the sharing session. They were all impressed
by the strong team spirit generated among
the staff members of Lee Kau Yan.
